Silhouettes and Outlines

Silhouettes and Outlines

In PYP 2 Omega we have been learning about silhouettes and outlines. Students are practising using imagination to describe the outlines of shapes in various ways. We are tying this creativity into our study of shapes and students expressed desire to explore light and shadow. We used ink blots, shadows, clouds and spilt liquid to stimulate expression.

Students watched, created and performed shows with shadow puppets, exploring ways that puppets could represent different characters.  Students created shadow mime for others to interpret.
Students examining a variety of outlines. Students identified common objects by their shadow, and created outlines for others to guess.

Students explored symmetry and imagination, creating nonsense paintings and interpreting them.

If you want to learn more about this at home I recommend these great books.

In the garden

PYP 2 in the garden

PYP 2 has been talking about living things and where things are from. So we started to plant our own food.

First the children had to clear the area from dry leaves and weeds. Then they worked on the old soil and added some new soil, in order to make it better and healthier for new plants to grow. Lastly, they racked the patches, added seeds, covered and watered them.

In our vegetable patch, the students are growing carrots, lettuce, peas and basil.

Take a look at the process and how it's looking like now!

Measuring and measuring and measuring

Measuring and measuring and measuring

In PYP2 we have been measuring. First, students have been working on estimation. They look at an object and they try to guess what the measurement will be. Then they measure using non-standard units. That means that we are measuring with blocks or sticks or feet. The students have been completing various activities.
Measuring helps students have a concrete idea of how tall or long objects are and with this knowledge they are also able to compare and contrast different objects.

Here the students are talking about what they saw when they looked at the collections that their classmates made with the linking blocks and objects from the classroom.

PYP2 Beta had their assembly on Wednesday the 30th of March. I am very proud to say that they did a fabulous job. I was so happy with all of the students. They remembered what to say, they spoke loudly and they were so excited and enthusiastic.
Congratulations PYP2 Beta!!!!
Thank you parents for coming. It was so good to see all of you there.

Here is the slide show that was presented during the assembly.

PYP 2 Sigma had a great time creating their assembly. First we had a class meeting about what we are learning in PYP 2, in Maths, in Language and in our Units of Inquiry, and the students chose their favourite activities to present on the big day. Then they voted on their favourite songs from Music lesson.

In our current Unit of Inquiry, the children have researched about different animals' needs, characteristics and curiosities in nonfiction books and online (www.kiddle.co.uk).
They made their own nonfiction books, which they took home on Friday and presented part of their research in our assembly.

Once they had the main idea in mind, the students came up with their own lines  and decided what props we would make together.
The next step was rehearsal. We rehearsed for almost three weeks. Wow!

WELL DONE PYP 2!

The result was awesome! We are all very proud of their hard work and dedication!

Dear PYP 2 Omega,
We were so proud of your performance. We loved the songs that you practised in music class! We can tell you are learning about living things and how they work together in "The Green Grass Grows All Around," and how humans and plants help each other in "Planting, Planting." It was fun to see and hear what you learned on your trip to the farm, when you shared your drawings with us. I laughed when you acted out the animal noises and motions during, "Here We Go to the Farm on the Bus!" The masks were so funny!
We also loved to hear the poems you wrote during poetry week. We could see you were learning about animal traits when you wrote them. We also enjoyed hearing what you were leaning about rhyming when you sang, "Down by the Bay." Your Portuguese poems about animals were so cool, it is good to know that your Portuguese and English learning compliment and enrich each other. We also liked seeing your writing when you shared the book you wrote in the style of "Brown Bear, Brown Bear." You combined reading, writing, drawing, and your Unit studies to create a book that shows all your learning! Great job.
It was such a special day to see how our presentation skills, Drama, Music, Portuguese and English studies fit together!

Thank you for the wonderful day!
