Our First Excursion: Little Red Riding Hood

Chapeuzinho Vermelho

What an exciting week! As part of our Unit of Inquiry, we have been learning about different ways stories are told. Last week we went to see one of our favourite stories live and in action! We traveled to Teatro Viradalata to see the theater company Cia. Le Plat Du Joir perform Chapeuzinho Vermelho.

As part of the trip we examined elements of theater such as props and scenery, and prepared questions to ask the actors about themselves and the performance.

We hope you enjoy these photos as much as we enjoyed the trip!

Maths and Science Week

Maths and Science Week!!

All of the Early Years and Primary classes participated in Maths and Science week from 16th November  to 19th November. The week started with a presentation from the Mad Scientists. It was a great show and the students really loved it. Ask you children to tell you all about it.
During the week students in PYP 2 were involved in activities related to Maths and Science in their classrooms. Each PYP 2 class did some similar activities and some different ones.
On Thursday PYP 2 and PYP 1 shared the activities they did throughout the week.

Here are some pictures of the students
in PYP2 Beta working in the centers
(below you will find pictures of PYP 2 Omega and
PYP 2 Sigma as well)

Building tall structures - trying to determine what needs to be done to build the tallest structure.

Boats that float - Here the students are making boats to see which boat will carry the most weight in the water.

What is the shape?

A shape is only a shape until all the detail is added around it and it because part of a much larger picture.

What rolls and what does not roll?

Shape pictures
Look at all the pictures we can make with shapes. Then the students will trace the shapes so they can take their pictures home.

What will float and what will sink???

Here are some photos of  PYP 2 Sigma working with PYP 1.

First PYP 2 went o PYP 1`s classroom to see their activities.

Then each PYP 2 student took a PYP 1 student to the PYP 2 classroom to show
them the activities that we did.

PYP 2 SIGMA

Last Monday we watched a Science show and some of us participated, as well.

We learned about Magnetism, Number Bonds, and Sinking and Floating
In our class we had different experiments to explore...

Testing different materials: are they magnetic?

Magnet race: Two poles that are the same repel each other.

Adding: When we put two groups of objects together we get a bigger number.

Adding machine: We put one group of pompoms in each of the pipes and when the fall,
we count the total of pompoms.

We visited PYP 1s to learn more about their experiments and discoveries.

PYP 1s visited us to learn more about our experiments.
Each group of PYP 2 student was responsible for presenting one of the activities we worked on throughout "Maths and Science Week" and PYP 1 students walked around our stations to learn about our discoveries.

First, we practised our experiments...

Testing our predictions about which objects sink and which float.

Predicting and counting how many marbles it takes to sink our toy boats.

Testing the properties of three dimensional shapes.

Then, we invited PYP 1 to share in our discoveries.
PYP 2 got to be the teachers to show and explore experiments to PYP 1 students.

You can see us exploring magnetism, density, three dimensional shapes, capacity, learning numbers and most importantly practising the scientific method of inquiry.

Learning hand in hand.

We learned lots of names and made lots of new friends!
If you see them, feel free to say hello.
